Texting Canadian customers, CASL-ready.

Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) sets strict rules for commercial texts: you need consent, you must say who you are, and every message needs a working unsubscribe. Textezy builds in all three and writes your messages in English and French.

What the rules require

Consent, identification and an easy way out.

CASL applies to every commercial electronic message sent to or from Canada, and it's enforced by the CRTC. Penalties for businesses can reach $10 million per violation, so getting the basics right matters.

  • Consent: express consent, or implied consent from a recent purchase or enquiry, before you send
  • Identification: your business name and a way to contact you in every message or linked from it
  • Unsubscribe: a free, simple way to opt out, honoured within 10 business days (Textezy does it instantly)

Two kinds of consent

Express or implied. Textezy tracks both.

  • Express consent

    Someone clearly says yes

They opt in on a form, by keyword or at checkout, after being told who is asking and that they can unsubscribe anytime. Express consent doesn't expire until they withdraw it. Textezy stores the wording they saw, the source and the time.

  • Implied consent

    An existing business relationship

A purchase in the last two years, or an enquiry in the last six months, lets you text for a limited time. Textezy records when that window closes and asks for express consent before it does.

Sender options

Canadian numbers for Canadian customers.

  • Local number

    Canadian long code

A regular 10-digit Canadian number for one-to-one conversations. Canadian carriers don't allow bulk campaigns from long codes, so marketing goes out by toll-free or short code.

  • Toll-free

    Verified toll-free

A verified 8XX number for national brands and customer service across both the US and Canada.

  • Short code

    Canadian short code

For high volumes and keywords such as “Text JOIN”. Approved through Canada's common short code programme and takes longer to set up.

Bilingual by default

One campaign, English and French.

Write once. The AI writer sends French to contacts who prefer it, including your customers in Quebec, with the unsubscribe wording in their language.

Canada FAQ

Questions about sending in Canada.

Does 10DLC registration apply in Canada?

No. 10DLC is a US carrier system. Texts to Canadian numbers follow Canadian carrier guidelines and CASL. If you also text US customers, Textezy registers those campaigns for 10DLC separately.

Do I need to send in French?

If you text customers in Quebec, French is expected, and Quebec's language rules require commercial communications to be available in French. Textezy's AI writer creates the French version for you.

How quickly must I honour an unsubscribe?

CASL allows up to 10 business days. Textezy stops sending as soon as someone replies STOP (or ARRET), so you're always well inside the limit.

Can I text people who gave me their number at checkout?

Usually yes, under implied consent, for up to two years after their purchase. Textezy tracks that window and prompts you to ask for express consent before it ends.
